Our Gluelam Wall System makes building “green” easier, faster, and far less labor
intensive. Its a lot lik when you were a kid. One component and one step and your
wall is finished.
The Gluelams, up to 16 feet long, are pre-cut and numbered, and grooved where they
meet door frames. Even the outlet boxes are mortised,and the wiring holes drilled
down to the sub floor. On some days the only tool needed is your DeWalt or
Milwaukee Super Hole Hawg drill with the included TORX T-40 bit.
The wood species with the most specific and latent heat capacity is good old Southern
Yellow Pine, the “TarHeel” wood. SYP has Thermal Inertia - the ability to store and
release energy. Gluelam walls have resisted 2x4 impacts at 150 mph in the Texas
Tech blow-gun tests.

Our Custom Post & Beam Homes & Earthlog Portions & Commercial Structures are
sold as pre-cut, numbered kits varying in size depending on your Design
requirements. Our homes are clear-span, or with just a few load-path posts - which
means the interior partitions are not load bearing and can be placed freely
The kit is a structural package that includes the timbers for the four exterior walls
and the two interior walls which form the envelope, as well as the flashings, gasket,
spline and fasteners to put the structure together.
Also included are the beams for the upstairs floor system and the rafters for the roof
structure. Doors, windows, flooring, and foam SIP roof panels are priced separately
as per your blueprint and climate.
Our Homes are shipped via tractor-trailer at a cost of approximately $2.00
per truck per mile. Mileage is measured from East Tennessee to your site.
Most homes fit on 1 or 2 trucks. The customer pays the freight company for shipping
upon delivery.
The Homes are massive - that's how they work. The kits represent value and are an
excellent investment.
Our kit price structure is based on timber wall area, the number of corners, the span
of beams and girders, and past experience with the design. The total finished cost of
the home depends on your tastes in finishing materials, how much (if any) work you
do yourself, and labor costs in your area. Expect your total home cost to be
approximately 3-4 times the kit cost. Specific site costs, such as land purchase,
blasting, or well drilling or septic are not included in these estimates.

An attached garage can be added to homes as an option. Timber kits are available for
those, or matching siding can be purchased for an attached or detached garage.
Custom Homes, Larger Homes, Townhouses, Office Buildings- are all custom
structures. Custom does not necessarily mean expensive- while we charge for the
custom design work we still price the kit by the linear foot of gluelam, internal spans,
and number of corners. Custom Design can be a great value because you get exactly
what you want
Wood walls replace siding, framing, insulation, and paneling. An air flow and access
channel, or Envelope, runs around the building, just inside the walls - creating a
miniature biosphere. Here solar heated air circulates, pumping and boosting
geothermal energy from beneath the house, storing it in the massive wood walls.
Thermal inertia causes the house to "float" between the cycles of night and day,
and even between the seasons.
" THERMAL INERTIA "
There is no logical reason to use a drop of fuel, or a watt of energy, to heat or cool
any home or building attached to the Earth. Just below the surface, within reach of
the average basement, is an infinite reservoir of heat that never drops below 50
degrees F. The night-day cycle is more than ample to raise that temperature into the
comfort zone, with a simple shift in Time. The use of daytime heat at night, and
nighttime cool by day, is made possible by Thermal Inertia, and the engineered Lag-
in-Time is a property of the thickness and Specific Heat of the solid wood walls.
" HEAT PUMP HOUSE "
The task of extracting useful heat from the geothermal reserve or outside air is
usually relegated to the electric Heat Pump.
Our solution, is to make the house itself a Heat Pump, using the natural energy of
rising solar-heated air to extract and enhance the pool of geothermal energy just
beneath the building's floor. Simple, foolproof, no CFC's, no electric bill (see "Heat
Pump House," Popular Science, June 1992, p.42).
" THE ENVELOPE "
Just how does a house, or office, or any ground-based structure get turned into a
natural energy machine? The secret is an air path, or "Envelope" just inside the
structure's solid wood skin. It is a heat path on a sunny Winter day, a continuously
recharging convection loop. A heat source, and extra insulation for a cold Winter
night. A miniature biosphere, oxygenated by Sunspace plants. A fresh air-to-air
exchanger with walls that breathe. A buffer zone to noise, wind, and outside pollution.
It is a ventilation path on the hot Summer day and on the cooler Summer night, when
it is open to the atmosphere. It is the dehumidification system when its permeable
outer wall is hit by the sun. And always, an access channel to otherwise unreachable
parts of the house when it comes time to update, add new wires, cables, pipes, or
technology.
" FLOATING "
The System works because the walls have the ability to gain, hold, and release heat.
They do double-duty as structure and storage. Their thermal mass and thermal lag
leads to "Floating," where stored daytime energy cancels out night-time need.
Floating can last for days, keeping the house comfortable during periods of little or
no sun. Massive houses experience seasonal "Float" as well, and can coast a month
or longer when lightweight houses need artificial heating or cooling. They float right
through heat waves and arctic blasts that would endanger occupants of other
buildings. ("Floating," Abstract: A Field study of the Effect of Wall Mass on the
Heating and Cooling loads of Residential Buildings, Doug Burch, et. al. National
Institute of Standards and Technology, 1982)
" DELTA T "
All architects and engineers work with the Heat Loss Equation. Heat loss equals the
temperature difference (Delta T) divided by resistance (the familiar R factor).
All modern attempts at energy efficiency have focused on the "R" factor - i.e. more
and more insulation into a thicker wall. But reducing Delta T has the same effect -
why not look at that? While insulation is necessary to increase "R" factor, Delta T
can be reduced by natural means. The Envelope presents an entirely different
Delta T to the living space than it would see if the house were single walled.
Because of it, the living space never "sees" conditions colder than the geothermal
temperature under the house! As the sunshine raises the Envelope temperature in
the closed Wintertime loop, Delta T goes to Zero, and "R Value" is meaningless.
At this point the house is in equilibrium and Heat Loss = 0.
" RADIANT HEATING "
The ultimate in heating and cooling, radiant walls and floors are inherent in the
Building System. When your feet are warm, you feel warm all over. It is efficient,
dust free, even heat - more healthy and invigorating because the air you breathe is
cooler. On the coldest Winter day, the Envelope keeps the North wall
warm and you can lean up against it. Try that in a conventional house.
" RADIANT COOLING "
The same thermal mass that acts as a heat source in winter becomes a heat sink in
summer, again enabling an energy-shift- in-time. The envelope is opened to the
outside for summer cooling - basement windows for intake, rooftop windows for
exhaust. Natural ventilation carries off internal heat captured by the massive walls
during the day. The permeable walls allow humidity to migrate towards the outer
surface where it is evaporated by the sun. Because of the envelope, the house is
wrapped by the cool in-ground climate.

Buildings, not cars, are the major damagers of the Earth. Pollution from the heating
and cooling of buildings exceeds that from cars, even in America. We just don't see it,
except maybe from the chimneys of an older city on a cold Winter day. It happens at
the power plant, and where the materials are made.
After agriculture, building is the second largest industry in the world. The
manufacture of building materials consumes enormous energy, and exhaustible
resources. To its credit, the building industry also uses the most renewables, i.e.
lumber.
We are surrounded by technical innovations - in our cars, our communications, and
our computers. Yet our largest lifetime purchase, our house, is built essentially the
same as it was eighty years ago. The home that will literally define our lives for
twenty, thirty, forty years into the future, is not future oriented.
Fortunately, this is about to change - the result of the emerging new practice of
Environmental (sometimes called Sustainable) Architecture. Architecture must look
into the future. Man can't always get it right of course, but we can use "open
channel" architecture to make it easy to add new, even unforeseen technology, and
handle climate changes decades down the road. A house built to 2005 standards is
obsolete before it is finished - how will it protect and comfort its occupants in 2025?
Housebuilding, now an archaic laborious task at best, needs to be taken into the
Twenty-First century and looked at by the ecologist, scientist, architect and engineer
on a clean sheet of paper.
The basic goal of Environmental Architecture is simple: attractive, comfortable,
affordable shelter that does no harm to the Earth in its manufacture, or its use.
Catch the energy falling on the house, and latch on to the Geothermal Reserve in
the Earth just beneath it. Use the excess heat from cooking, washing, and human
activity in Winter, and design to get rid of it in Summer. Go with Nature instead of
fighting, or isolating from it.
Design and build for long useful service life. This makes housing affordable, as the
cost is spread over many generations. In Europe the typical design life of a home is
300 years. The house must be sturdy, disaster resistant. Bullet-proof.
No life-threatening or building threatening dependencies on electricity - as in power
out = freezing temperatures = burst pipes = a flooded basement. Reduced
brownout/blackout sensitive cooling, as in a summer heat wave.
The house is Futureproof, with access channels all around the structure to easily
upgrade and add future technology. Making it convenient to run new cables, pipes
and wires.
Capable of being "stand-alone" without connection to the gas mains, or electric
utility grid. Even if street power is used at first, all homes must be designed this way.
Solar electricity can be used, within the design life of any quality structure built today
It is incredible what an Ecological dent even one environmental house makes,
preventing half-a-million pounds of pollution over thirty years. The goal, of course,
is that every home be an Environmental home, reducing pollution to pre-industrial
levels. Actually, this is more attainable than you might think, and won't take long,
because the average conventional home isn't built to last and will soon need to be
replaced!
